Yves achieved his dream of earning a Bachelor’s degree through flexible distance learning at SRH Fernhochschule, while gaining valuable practical experience for his career in SAP consulting.

For many students, combining university studies with work and personal commitments can be challenging. For SRH Distance Learning University (SRH DLU) graduate Yves, flexible distance learning made it possible to complete his Bachelor’s degree while gaining practical experience and preparing for a career in SAP consulting.
Originally from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Yves moved to Germany around ten years ago to pursue his education. After financial difficulties and a long commute forced him to put his university studies on hold, he never gave up on his goal of earning a degree. Discovering SRH DLU gave him a second opportunity: to work while studying, avoid long commutes and finally achieve a goal he had never stopped believing in.
Before joining SRH DLU, Yves was enrolled at another university, where travelling to campus took almost two hours each way. The long commute made it difficult to combine studies with gaining professional experience.
I wanted to gain practical work experience while studying. That made distance learning the right choice for me because it gave me the flexibility to combine my studies with work.
While searching online for distance-learning universities in Germany, Yves discovered SRH DLU and was immediately attracted to its flexible study model. The possibility of completing a degree while working and managing other responsibilities made distance learning a natural fit.
Although starting an online degree was initially unfamiliar, the experience quickly proved positive. The programme’s structured learning materials, regularly updated content and accessible professors helped make independent study manageable.
One of the biggest challenges was finding enough time to study alongside work and personal commitments. Rather than following a rigid timetable, the flexibility of SRH DLU allowed Yves to organise his studies around his individual schedule.
I was able to study at my own pace and take my exams when I felt properly prepared. This gave me enough time to understand the material instead of feeling pressured to meet a fixed schedule.
At the same time, Yves found that studying independently did not mean studying alone. Professor Koch was not only the programme director but one of his favourite professors, teaching several modules throughout his degree. He particularly appreciated Professor Koch’s professionalism, experience and knowledge of economics, as well as his supportive and approachable way of working whenever questions or guidance were needed.
His study advisor, Mrs. Schmidt, was another important source of support. She responded quickly to emails and provided useful information and guidance whenever questions or issues arose during his studies.
For Yves, this combination of flexible distance learning and personal academic support made a significant difference. He could take responsibility for his own progress while knowing that experienced professors and study advisors were accessible whenever he needed guidance.
The programme also helped connect academic learning with real-world business challenges. A particular highlight was the Practice Project module, which focused on optimising SAP Sales and Distribution within a Fourth-Party Logistics (4PL) supply chain.
Working on a practical project provided an opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge to a real business context and develop a deeper understanding of SAP, logistics and supply-chain processes.
The experience also helped shape Yves career ambitions, strengthening an interest in SAP consulting, particularly in the areas of logistics, Sales and Distribution, and supply chain management.
For Yves, completing a Bachelor’s degree represents both an academic and personal milestone. Previously, not having a university degree had been a barrier to pursuing a career in SAP consulting. Completing the degree has now opened that door.
The next goal is to build on the knowledge and experience gained during the programme and pursue a career in SAP and supply chain management.
Beyond professional opportunities, completing the degree has also brought greater confidence and motivation to continue developing personally and professionally.
For anyone considering distance learning while working, the experience offers a clear message: flexibility can make it possible to take control of your own learning journey.
I would recommend SRH DLU to anyone who wants to study while having the flexibility to work or manage other responsibilities at the same time.
For this graduate, being able to decide when to start a module and when to take an exam made it possible to prepare thoroughly without unnecessary pressure.
The combination of flexible learning, academic support and practical application ultimately provided the foundation for the next step: turning a Bachelor’s degree into a career in SAP consulting.
